Orthodontics & Orthopedics in Kingston & Napanee

Although both help to correct misalignments in your smile, orthopedics often precedes orthodontics in order to better control the growth of the facial and jaw structures.

Approximately 20% of malocclusion in children is due to genetics. This means that the majority of bite problems are due to environmental factors, such as allergies, mouth breathing and poor tongue positioning. All of these play a role in the development of a child’s facial and jaw structure.

As a result, it’s important to counteract these forces by employing orthopedics. This type of therapy uses a variety of removable oral appliances for the short term to prevent future complications, such as poor sleep habits, TMJ, sleep apnea and bite problems.

If orthopedics isn’t enough to resolve these issues, orthodontics may be recommended, which is more extensive and involves the use of braces to shift misaligned teeth into proper alignment. Orthodontics is more long term and may require that the patient wear braces for up to a few years to correct their teeth's positioning. Dr. David Craig and Associates (both Kingston and Napanee dental offices) also offers Invisalign invisible braces that can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing.
